Home sweet home.

Some people dye or cut their hair when they need a change, others pick up hobbies.  I like to play around with home decor.  Your space is so important to your mental health, and the happier and calmer you feel in it, the more likely you are to be a pleasant human being, and at the end of the day isn’t that what we are all striving for?
First came the idea of changing the color of my walls. I’ve had my bedroom and living room the same avocado green for almost 4 years and to be honest with you, have grown tired of it.  I’ve noticed having to cater to the color far too often when making decisions about new purchases, and think that moving towards a more neutral wall color (such as a very pale cool grey for example) would allow me more freedom when choosing artwork or textiles for the room.  In addition to this paint job, I was also pining for some vintage pieces for my kitchen and living room (cool vintage book ends have been on my radar along with kitchy 50’s salt and pepper shakers) along with some new area rugs, perhaps with simple geometric designs such as the one shown below.  Urban outfitters is having a decent home sale, and I ordered a few rugs along with some cool posters in preparation for my new wall color.
Below are some of my purchases, along with pieces I’ve been spying on Etsy.

These bad ass book ends are way over my budget, but are seriously awesome.  Don’t ya think?  (find them here.)
Vintage Eskimo salt and pepper shakers?  #swoon

Look at that patina!  amazing book end.
Chase Kuntz for Society6 skull print.
Isn’t this an amazing jewelry storage and display idea? I am going to be on the look out for a tennis racket at every thrift store I walk into.  Brilliant! (thanks Etsy!)
I couldn’t help myself with this tapestry.  I’m not even sure which wall I would put it on but I fell in love with the whimsical artwork and colors.

Brett Wilkinson prints: will go perfect in my bedroom.

Or how about a coat rack to hang up your bags?? I love the fact that they are all displayed and can easily be put on or taken off the rack, and it looks artsy too. This one is from Timeless Wrought Iron, but you can find much more affordable versions at most retailers that sell home goods, or wait around for a vintage one from an antique shop!

Ethnic rug.  Loving the idea of this with grey walls. On sale now at Urban Outfitters.

I really suck as decorating. What do you think is the best way to get good at it? Practice maybe?

Start with colors you like, and work around that.. I always find it helpful to have a theme or story to go by, so for example if you see a rug or a duvet cover you love and buy that, then buy pieces that go with it for the rest of the room :)
