Where has all the street style gone?
When did street style become runway style on models that happen to be walking down the street? Or even better, bloggers who feel obligated to wear things that have been given to them by designers.
I remember the good old days, when everyone and their mothers were not walking around in contrived ridiculous outfits, in the hopes of getting a street style shot. The streets were full of fashionable people even then, trust me, but at that point they were doing it for themselves, not an audience. I miss those days. What about all the coverage of these supposed "street style stars" It's the same 5 girls, shot by 25 photographers, caught in a similar but not exactly the same angle.. Woah good job guys! you really know how to capture an almost lost fashion moment, oh wait, no you don't, you're actually missing all the good stuff because you're too busy trying to catch a designer bag you need to shoot for the publication you work for. Dare I say lame?
I've been doing some image searching this week to see what kinds of interesting looks people came up with for nyfw, yet all that pops up is the same 10 looks. Funny I had this thought because at the same exact moment that I was writing the draft for this post... this New York Times Article was also posted. Obviously a coincidence, but I think it's also simple observation of what's happening with fashion these days. Everything original get's sucked into the mass market, because that's where the money is. This isn't a new tale by any means, we see it in all realms of art and design, but come on people, can't you try to make it just a tad less contrived?
